Portishead was formed in 1991 by a singer Beth Gibbons and keybord player and multiinstrumentalist Geoff Barrow, who named the band after the nearby town of the same name, 8 miles west of Bristol, where he grew up.
The first Portishead album Dummy was released in1994. Despite the band's aversion to press coverage, the album was surprisingly successful in United Kingdom and won the Mercury Prize in 1995. Adrian Utley, who co-produced the album with Portishead (and who played on most of the tracks), became an official band member shortly after the album's release.
Three years later, the second, eponymous, album was released.. From 1999 for the next few years, the band members concentrated on solo and other pursuits. In February 2005, the band appeared live for the first time in seven years at Bristol Academy for a benefit in association with Oxfam to help the victims of the Tsunami late 2004. The album 'Third' was released in April 2008.
